What is sports rehabilitation and injury prevention?

As a relatively new profession within the UK, we appreciate that there maybe some questions with regards to what sports rehabilitation and injury is all about. The degree program is currently available at four Universities in England, however on a more global scale, the equivalent in the USA or Canada are Athletic Therapists or Athletic Trainers. Within sport in the USA or Canada Athletic Therapists are commonly found working alongside athletes or teams instead of physiotherapists due to the specific training in sporting situations and pitch side care.

Graduate Sport Rehabilitation is the rehabilitation of an orthopaedic and or muskuloskeletal injury utilising a sports medicine model of rehabilitation. Early exercise intervention is often given to aggressively heal soft tissue injuries and to maintain/increase mobility.
Treatments consist of manual therapy, exercise therapy and the utilisation of an electro modality such as ultrasound, interferential current etc.
Techniques include but not limited to
  • Active release techniques
  • Muscle energy techniques
  • Joint mobilization
  • Myofascial release
  • Core strengthening
  • Postural Correction
